Bodega Head Rocks! Do you ever wonder about local rocks, the San Andreas Fault, and the Hole in the Head? The landscape you see is largely controlled by the geology under our feet! Discover how the Bodega Head area showcases our region’s fascinating geology, and walk away with a better understanding of the forces (including humans) which have shaped this landscape through time. Learn about geology, rocks, faults, and California’s amazing and complex geologic history.

This event includes a slow-paced relatively easy hike around the 1.7 mile loop trail at Bodega Head, with some off-trail walking. Some of the trails include varied terrain and uneven surfaces.

In addition to learning about the history of these amazing geologic formations, you can also expect to see seals and other sea life, a large amounts of seabirds, and masses of beautiful wildflowers!

Hosted by the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods.

The Cedars Ecological Preserve: this geotour is a rare opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind landscape (looks more like a Mars-scape)! The Cedars boasts ultramafic geology (serpentinite), unique flora (7 species of plant found nowhere else on Earth), sweeping vistas, a beautiful grotto with waterfall, and the headwaters of Austin Creek.

Guided by noted botanist and conservationist Roger Raiche, we will access this isolated landscape which is otherwise largely inaccessible.

The hike involves 2-4 rigorous miles walking on gravel roads, smaller trails with steep inclines & declines, and several creek crossings. We will stop frequently along the way to learn about the features visible at the Cedars and will generally take a fairly leisurely pace.  We will begin & end our hike near a very refreshing waterfall and pool.

Join fellow geo-nerds interested in the geology of coastal Sonoma County. From Shell Beach to Bodega Head, we will discuss the geology of the Coast Ranges, the San Andreas Fault, and various coastal features visible from our stops. Learn about the formation of coastal California, identification of local rocks, and see the difference between the geology east and west of the fault.
